Culturally Safe Cataract Information Poster = Great Patient Education

June 26, 2024

A recent collaboration between our Indigenous and Remote Service team, Laynhapuy Homelands Health Service; Marthakal Homelands; Sunrise Health; Helen Summers Optometrist from East Arnhem Land; Dean Milner from Big Rivers Region and staff from the Menzies Institute resulted in the development of a cataract information poster for patients.

During the engagement process we discussed the needs of specific regions and common themes around what a poster for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Peoples requiring cataract surgery would look like. It was decided the poster should be -

  • Simple
  • Cross-cultural and address linguistic communication barriers
  • Contain relatable images
  • Be easily displayed and transported at remote clinics
  • Be in language
  • Reinforce that the surgical team has a lot of experience
  • Tell patients that they are going to be safe
  • Tell the patients that our team will take good care of them.

We took this feedback on board and developed a culturally safe education poster that meets the needs of our patients and one that will promote well-being.

We are very proud of the pictorial poster that we developed with assistance forthe pictorial design from the Aboriginal owned and Darwin based production company, Moogie Downs.

This poster has been translated into Djambarrpuyŋu and East Side Kriol by accredited local translators.  The poster will be translated into additional languages based on our patient cohort over the next 12 months.

If you would like us to send you an electronic version of the poster please email us at surgical@vanguardhealth.com.au and we would be happy to send them to you.
